mic duo Tomas and Christina Martinez hosted an event bigger than the pages of their San Antonio-based publication, Luxury Home Magazine. A pleasant, winding road and beautiful landscaping broke with ease to reveal private residences and views of the Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course foreshadowed just how luxe my evening was going to get. Attendees were greeted by a fleet of designer cars lining the walkway of the sprawling Cordillera Ranch mansion. The perfectly perched Fisker Karma Hybrid, Mercedes 4-door Sedan, and, my favorite, Maserati created wide-eyed optimism to just what was in store.
On the contrary of being considered an average party, and I dare not compare it to a mere “showing” for real estate agents and potential buyers; this was an event that put corporate decision makers and business owners in a comfortable environment… that just so happened to be a 7300 square foot custom home (See La Bella Vida for info). Live music inspired my husband and me to talk to complete strangers. However, looking around it seemed as if the entire congregation felt equally compelled and truly interested in the possibility of talking to everyone in the house (which included three balconies and two kitchens). The chatter, laughter, and guitar gave way as professional salsa dancers took to the floor. Their performance, none shorter than acrobatic, was followed by applause then the bass drum re-introduced the crowd to their previous conversations.
Waiters carrying trays of margarita-tinis and a selection of wines paced the hardwood, stone and marble floors as Tomas weaved in and out making sure his 150-esque guests were enjoying themselves. “You HAVE to meet Sandy!” he says to me, and I am swept to Sandy’s side, she introduces me her business partner, Elizabeth, a photographer; and yes, Tomas was right, I had to meet her. This was happening all over the house. Beautiful people were connecting as if the pages of Luxury Home had come to life.
“Salsa, live music, and cocktails do not an evening make.” Well at least not to the Luxury team. After a few minutes of schmoozing it occurred to me, “something smells really good!” Chef Thierry, of The Grill at Leon Springs, created an off-menu collection of savory treats, my immediate favorite, the sweet & sour tempura prawns. There were waiters everywhere. My husband, however, thoroughly enjoyed the magnificent display of rare cheeses, antipasti, tarts and deserts spread across two rooms.
I found that I had to pace myself or the evening would get away from me. Between sightseeing and networking I only noticed just how many people were at the event when the president of the Lo Bello de San Antonio Women’s Club, Amelia Garza, was introduced to the crowd. Her organization is responsible for raising more than $800,000 to support educational scholarships and opportunities for community members. She invites everyone to the Club’s annual Champagne & Diamonds Fiesta event in April. There is nothing I love more than a gathering that has direction, positive surprises, great entertainment and comfortable exclusivity, San Antonio’s newest publication, hosted an “anything but” swanky soiree in the illustrious Texas Hill Country.
I am sure after this amount of subtle showmanship an invitation to a Luxury Home Magazine event has definitely increased its notoriety among the corporate and entrepreneurial attendees.
After the launch of the Magazine’s third issue, Team Martinez are vibrant, calm and committed to increasing the amount of smiles between sips, even as the party began to wind down. I noticed people in a mad dash to meet one-more person or get a lasting look of the Texas sunset.
Patiently waiting for the valet, in between Googling directions back to downtown San Antonio and tweeting I notice my husband enjoying the stars. Looking down at the stack of glossy business cards from media marketers, luxury car boutiques, photo studios, small business insurance agents, and IT professionals, I feel like I had spent an evening amongst the stars.
